1. In the essay “A Room of One’s Own” Woolf writes “we asked you to speak about women and fiction– what has that got to do with a room of one’s own?. . . All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point—a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” After reading that and thinking about what she could mean by that I think I may have an idea. I believe Woolf if saying that if you can’t afford to live on you own and pay your own bills, you don’t have the experience to write about these things. Being independent and having your own make you think for yourself, and keeps your writing completely unbiased. When you relay on someone else, you have to watch your words and be sure not to anger that other person. So I believe that could be what she was referring to. Woolf knew that many writers write with the intention to sway their audience in a certain direction that suits their needs and wants.

2. In her essay, A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf invents a sister for Shakespeare named Judith. Woolf does this so the readers can imagine how life would be if Shakespeare actually had a sister. Although Shakespeare’s sister was a genius just like him, her parents did not allow her to be educated because she was suppose to “mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about with books and papers” (qtd. in Norton 2268). If Shakespeare’s sister was given the right to be educated, it would have been a problem for men since they would not like the idea of a female being superior to them. Suicide was Judith’s only option because if she “had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty” (qtd. in Norton 2269). If Judith revealed her genius works to society, she would have been mocked due to her gender. Woolf’s illustration reveals about women throughout history that they were locked in a world where their role were only housewife duties. If a woman had the intellectual gifts like Shakespeare, she would “certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village […]” (qtd. in Norton 2269).

3. Woolf is able to identify differences between the way women are depicted in literature and women’s lives in reality because she has lived it. Being a writer Woolf is able to distinguish between false and true statements, and is also able to tell when someone is intending to be genuine or not. Women are at times looked at in many different senses. Some acts of literature show women as goddesses and that they are to be treated with the utmost respect and to never be looked down upon. Other’s may see women as the backbone to men in a way, someone who is to do what she is told and not talk back. I think these problems definitely still exist today, women are still always trying to prove themselves and their rights to have an opinion and to be treated equally to a man.
