1. I think Woolf’s observation still applies in the 21st century. Despite the advances we’ve made in womens rights, women are still influenced by social norms and expectations. I think that is what Woolf may have been alluding to when she described the obstacles as immense, and hard to define. There may not be a physical barrier preventing women from pursuing certain careers but there may be a mental one.

2. Virginia Woolf writes that “They spend immense skill and immense industry making the trivial and the transitory appear the true and enduring.” (Woolf 2151) It is through this skill that the writer captures the essence of the human experience. One can write about the everyday mundane, that would be a diary. An author, on the other hand, makes us want to read and experience the everyday mundane.
