The actions of law enforcement officers are often called into question, due to the very public nature of what they do. A distinction has been made between “testifying” and “testifying,” with the latter involving mistrusts about specific police behaviors and choices. Some of these mistrusts stem from the officer not perfectly remembering what occurred. Other lies stem from the desire to cover oneself and avoid getting in trouble, losing one’s job, or being subject to criminal sanctions. What can be done about deception among the police in these situations?
