1. To practice organizing information in an outline, complete the following activity:

   Here is some information a student gathered about the potato famine in Ireland. Use an outline format to organize the information into main points and supporting information. You can add main ideas if you wish and ignore any information you do not think is important.

   Potato famine in 1865 in Ireland, and more than 1,000,000 die there. Explorers brought over potato from Americas. Potato important in Ireland from 1580s, when introduced into Ireland from Americas. Soon, main food of Ireland. Only planted one kind of potato, though. When blight struck, it killed most of crop in 1 month! 1865. Desperate people from Ireland flood into America, where potato came from. Tens of thousands come in. Lesson: grow more than one kind of potato.
