The purpose of this proposal is to define and summarize different strategies on how to handle the growing number of elderly people in the near future and the new problems it may bring. As we all know, one of our greatest achievements of this century is the substantial increase on human life expectancy. For example, in 1902 the life expectancy was only 45 years old, however today it has risen to 78.5 and is steady rising, despite diseases like cancer and heart disease. While the dramatic rise is human life expectancy is nothing short of amazing, when you actually sit down and think about how many elderly people it will actually be in the year 2025, its quite shocking. Whether we like it or not, we have an aging population and we have to figure out a way to deal with it.
The main cause of this problem is the baby boomers generation. Baby boomers are those born in the years following WWII. This generation had the highest birth rate in history. Now this generation is becoming senior citizens and they are going to require lots of care. America’s health care cost are expected to soar as these baby boomers become senior citizens.
Some problems that the growing number of elderly will propose. The first main concern would be the need for increased spending on health care and pensions. There has already been talk about cutting out things such as social security or lowing it. With this increase in our aging population, that definitely would not be the best thing to do. Another major problem is the shortage of healthcare workers. Nurses are in a really high demand and its only going to get worse in the future. We need a way to train healthcare workers in a cost effective way. We will also have to allocate more money to focus on chronic diseases, such as alzheimers, heart disease, osteoporosis, rather than spending as much money on acute illness, like the flu.
