Healthy People

An important role of nursing is to provide health promotion and disease prevention. Review the 2020 Topics and Objectives on the Healthy People website. Choose a topic of interest that you would like to address, in conjunction with a population at-risk for the associated topic. Submit the topic and associated group to your instructor for approval.

Create a 15-20-slide PowerPoint presentation for your topic and focus group. Include speaker notes and citations for each slide, and create a slide at the end for References.

Address the following:

  1. Describe the approved topic and associated population your group has selected. Discuss how this topic adversely affects the population. How does health disparity affect this population?
  2. Explain evidence-based approaches that can optimize health for this population. How do these approaches minimize health disparity among affected populations?
  3. Outline a proposal for health education that can be used in a family-centered health promotion to address the issue for the target population. Ensure your proposal is based on evidence-based practice.
  4. Present a general profile of at least one health-related organization for the selected focus topic. Present two resources, national or local, for the proposed education plan that can be utilized by the provider or the patient.
  5. Identify interdisciplinary health professionals important to include in the health promotion. What is their role? Why is their involvement significant?

For this Assignment, you will consider the validity and reliability of different assessment tools and diagnostic tests. You will explore issues such as sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. You will also consider examples of children with various weight issues. You will explore how you could effectively gather information and encourage parents and caregivers to be proactive about their children’s health and weight.

To Prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider factors that impact the validity and reliability of various assessment tools and diagnostic tests. You also will review examples of pediatric patients and their families as it relates to BMI.
  • By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to one of the following Assignment options by your Instructor: Adult Assessment Tools or Diagnostic Tests (option 1), or Child Health Case (Option 2). Note: Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your assignments from your Instructor.
  • Search the Walden Library and credible sources for resources explaining the tool or test you were assigned. What is its purpose, how is it conducted, and what information does it gather?
  • Also, as you search the Walden library and credible sources, consider what the literature discusses regarding the validity, reliability, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, ethical dilemmas, and controversies related to the test or tool.
  • If you are assigned Assignment Option 2 (Child), consider what health issues and risks may be relevant to the child in the health example.
    • Based on the risks you identified, consider what further information you would need to gain a full understanding of the child’s health. Think about how you could gather this information in a sensitive fashion.
    • Consider how you could encourage parents or caregivers to be proactive toward the child’s health.

The Assignment

Assignment (3–4 pages, not including title and reference pages):

Assignment Option 2: Child Health Case:
Include the following:

  • An explanation of the health issues and risks that are relevant to the child you were assigned.
  • Describe additional information you would need in order to further assess his or her weight-related health.
  • Identify and describe any risks and consider what further information you would need to gain a full understanding of the child’s health. Think about how you could gather this information in a sensitive fashion.

sampling theory

4- Sampling is process where certain number of people are selected from the population, these selected people will represent the whole targeted population and the theory concerning sampling process is known as sampling theory (Grove, Gary, & Burns, 2015).

The sampling theory is commonly used to gather information related to population in medical, social, business, psychological sector. The sampling is done as it is not possible to do research on everyone thus, they are selected based on the topic or area of research (Ullah, 2018). For example, a research is to be conducted on “average age of marriage of women in Nepal.” Here, sampling can be done by selecting 10 families from each state, that includes 10 different states, from the whole country, this makes the data collection easier as it includes 100 families and is unbiased as number is equally distributed.

Generalizability is the effectiveness of the research, as effective and successful research is known to have good Generalizability. It is essential in Nursing research as our research are mainly related to health of people or health related problems of them.

5-   Sampling theory is the field of statistics that is involved with the collection, analysis and interpretation of data gathered from random samples of a population under study.  In the application of the sampling theory, it is concerned with the proper selection of observations from the population that will constitute the random sample, the use of probability theory, along with prior knowledge about the population parameters, to analyze the data from the random sample and develop conclusions from the analysis. The normal distribution, along with related probability distributions, is most heavily utilized in developing the theoretical background for sampling theory (Sampling Theory, n.d.). For example, finding out the percentage of damaged tools produced during a given 5-day week in a specific factory by examining 30 tools daily at a specific time. All the tools produced in this case during the week represents the population, while the 150 selected tools during 5-days constitute a sample.

Generalization is the act of reasoning that involves drawing broad inferences from particular observations, it is widely-acknowledged as a quality standard in quantitative research but is more controversial in qualitative research (Polit & Beck 1970). It is important in nursing research as it provides the ability to generalize results allows researchers to interpret and apply findings in a broader context, making the finding relevant and meaningful.

6-Sampling theory is a study of relationships existing between a population and samples drawn from the population. Sampling theory is applicable only to  random  samples . For this  purpose  the population or a universe may be defined as an aggregate of items possessing a common trait or traits.

Example:  We may wish to draw conclusions about the percentage of defective bolts produced in a factory during a given 6-day week by examining 20 bolts each day produced at various times during the day. Note that all bolts produced in this case during the week comprise the population, while the 120 selected bolts during 6-days constitute a sample.

Generalizability refers to the extension of a research finding as well as conclusions from the study conducted on sample population to the large population.

Example:   W hen a person wants to find out the percentage of people who smoke in a certain country. A sample would be taken in order to represent the entire population as well as findings taken to represent the general population.

r purpose of your analysis

Select one of the following four concepts for your paper: trust, hope, suffering, uncertainty. Once you’ve chosen your concept, complete the following:Determine the aim or purpose of your analysis; what do you want to accomplish by conducting this concept analysis? Answer the questions “Why am I doing this?” and “Why is this relevant to nursing knowledge and nursing science?” Conduct your literature review by identifying all uses of the term that you can discover. Answer “what are the known conceptualizations?     Locate and use a minimum of: 3 dictionary definitions; 1 thesaurus entry; and 5 scholarly references from the nursing literature (you may use non-nursing literature, if necessary). Combined, these references will be the basis for identifying and defining attributes of your selected concept.Determine the critical or defining attributes of the concept by identifying what each instance or use of the term has in common with the other uses. The more scholarly references you locate and use, the easier it is to determine critical attributes of a concept.Define the 4 cases using the critical attributes:     Construct a model case, or a real-life scenario that uses the concept and includes all critical attributes of the concept. Explain how you use each critical attribute. This case should be an accurate representation or model of your concept.Construct a contrary case, or one that is opposite of the concept. Support the claims you make by explaining how and why the contrary case does not contain any of the critical attributes of your concept.Construct a borderline case, or one that is related to the concept but is not actually an example of the concept. Support the claims you make by explaining how and why the borderline case differs from the model and contrary cases (i.e., does not contain all of the critical attributes of your concept, etc.)Construct an invented case, or fictitious scenario that uses the concept and includes all of the critical attributes. Explain how you use each of the critical attributes

Instructions:Complete a working draft of steps 1-4 of your assignment “Paper: Concept Analysis.” As a “check-in” opportunity, selected components of steps 1-4 must be provided in your post. If you have had insights that have developed since beginning your assignment, post them in your initial post. If you are unsure about how to do something, ask in your initial post. In short, this is your space to use to your advantage in order to revise and refine your work thus far and progress towards a final product. You should include the following:Why are you doing a concept analysis (besides earning course credit)? Why are concepts significant to the discipline? How do concept analyses contribute to nursing knowledge and nursing science? These questions should be answered in your introduction paragraph where you describe your aim/purpose.Of the 4 concepts (trust, hope, suffering, uncertainty), which one did you select?Post your reference list thus far; include 3 dictionaries,1 thesaurus, and a minimum of 5 scholarly references from the literature (nursing and non-nursing literature). What are the defining attributes of your concept you’ve identified? Of the 4 cases (model, contrary, borderline, invented) using the critical attributes, select and describe 1 case in your initial post.

healthcare system

Think about your experiences with the healthcare system. Discuss an ethical or legal situation involving healthcare from your personal or professional life (or that happened to someone you know).

Or, think about a story you heard or read about in the news recently involving health care. Then, address the following:

  • What about that situation stands out to you? Was that person treated fairly? Why or why not?
  • What was the outcome?
  • What, if anything, could have been done differently to improve the situation and/or the outcome?

Reflect on how this experience influenced your perception of health care providers or the healthcare system.

national nursing associations

Nursing is a very highly regulated profession. There are over 100 boards of nursing and national nursing associations throughout the United States and its territories. Their existence helps regulate, inform, and promote the nursing profession. With such numbers, it can be difficult to distinguish between BONs and nursing associations, and overwhelming to consider various benefits and options offered by each.

Both boards of nursing and national nursing associations have significant impacts on the nurse practitioner profession and scope of practice. Understanding these differences helps lend credence to your expertise as a professional. In this Assignment, you will practice the application of such expertise by communicating a comparison of boards of nursing and professional nurse associations. You will also share an analysis of your state board of nursing.

To Prepare:

  • Assume that you are leading a staff development meeting on regulation for nursing practice at your healthcare organization or agency.
  • Review the NCSBN and ANA websites to prepare for your presentation.

The Assignment: (9- to 10-slide PowerPoint presentation)

Develop a 9- to 10-slide PowerPoint Presentation that addresses the following:

  • Describe the differences between a board of nursing and a professional nurse association.
  • Describe the geographic distribution, academic credentials, practice positions, and licensure status of members of the board for your specific region/area.
    • Who is on the board?
    • How does one become a member of the board?
  • Describe at least one federal regulation for healthcare.
    • How does this regulation influence delivery, cost, and access to healthcare (e.g., CMS, OSHA, and EPA)?
    • Has there been any change to the regulation within the past 5 years? Explain.
  • Describe at least one state regulation related to general nurse scope of practice.
    • How does this regulation influence the nurse’s role?
    • How does this regulation influence delivery, cost, and access to healthcare?
  • Describe at least one state regulation related to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs).
    • How does this regulation influence the nurse’s role?
    • How does this regulation influence delivery, cost, and access to healthcare?

health information technology

With the increase of health information technology used to store and access patient information, the likelihood of security breaches has also risen. In fact, according to the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ):

In the United States, there was a whopping 97% increase in the number of health records breached from 2010 to 2011… The number of patient records accessed in each breach has also increased substantially, from 26,968 (in 2010) to 49,394 (in 2011). Since August 2009, when the US government regulated that any breach affecting more than 500 patients be publicly disclosed, a total of 385 breaches, involving more than 19 million records, have been reported to the Department of Health and Human Services.

A large portion of those breaches, 39%, occurred because of a lost, stolen, or otherwise compromised portable electronic device—a problem that will likely only get worse as iPads, smartphones, and other gadgets become more common in hospitals. (CMAJ, 2012, p. E215).
Consider your own experiences. Does your organization use portable electronic devices? What safeguards are in place to ensure the security of data and patient information? For this Discussion you consider ethical and security issues surrounding the protection of digital health information.

To prepare

Review the Learning Resources dealing with the security of digital health care information. Reflect on your own organization or one with which you are familiar, and think about how health information stored electronically is protected.
Consider the nurse’s responsibility to ensure the protection of patient information. What strategies can you use?
Reflect on ethical issues that are likely to arise with the increased access to newer, smaller, and more powerful technology tools.
Consider strategies that can be implemented to ensure that the use of HIT contributes to an overall culture of safety.
Post an analysis of the nurse’s responsibility to protect patient information and the extent that HIT has made it easier or more difficult to protect patient privacy. Comment on any security or ethical issues related to the use of portable devices to store information. Assess the strategies your organization uses to safeguard patient information and how these promote a culture of safety. Describe an area where improvement is needed and one strategy that could address the situation.
