Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication when delivering a speech

Assignment Overview

In this practice exercise, you will explore four styles that effective speakers use when delivering speeches.

Deliverables

A one-page (250-word) paper

Step 1 Research a speech.

Using your course materials and the internet, research a speech that you feel is particularly effective, then analyze each speaker’s style and language strategies.

Step 2 Answer the questions.

In a one-page (250-word) paper, address the following:

  • Who was the speaker, and what was that speaker’s main topic?
  • What CORE style(s) does the speaker use in his or her speech? Cite the choice of word phrases and other clues from the speech to justify your answer.
  • What you believe is the speech’s specific purpose?
  • What strategies did the speaker use to achieve the specific purpose of the speech?
  • Do you believe the speaker was successful in achieving the specific purpose of the speech?
  • How does style and word choice in this speech impact the effectiveness of the message?
  • How can you incorporate some of these techniques into your own speeches?

The Lab Assignment
Choose one skin condition graphic (identify by number in your Chief Complaint) to document your assignment in the SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) note format rather than the traditional narrative style. Refer to Chapter 2 of the Sullivan text and the Comprehensive SOAP Template in this week’s Learning Resources for guidance.   • Consider the issues you have noticed while implementing the intervention and/or gathering data for your DNP Project or another evidence-based project. In this week’s Discussion, you will examine how current policies impact how you as a nurse provide health care. You will then select an issue of interest and determine how you could advocate for policy in that area.

To prepare:

  • Select one public policy that currently is impacting you and your practice. Consider the following:
    • What health care driver was the policy designed to address: cost, quality, access, or a combination?
    • Does the policy appear to be achieving its intended results? On what data are you basing your assumption?

Post a brief description of a public policy that is having an impact on your practice; summarize your analysis of the policy using the bulleted list above as a guide. Then, summarize the issue you would like to influence though a change in public policy, and outline how you would utilize Kingdon’s Model to guide your policy development.

Case Study# 1: Linda, a 61-year-old woman discovers a lump in her breast. She visits her gynecologist who orders a biopsy, which reveals the presence of malignant cells. The woman is married, with one child who was born when she was 32. She reports that she breastfed her child for the first three months then switched to formula. She had her first period at the age of 14 and entered menopause at age 55. She smoked as a teenager but quit after a few years. She is about 40 pounds overweight and reports that she tends to eat fast food for lunch most weekdays. Her mother also had breast cancer. She has two younger sisters, but neither of them has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Case Study#2: Johnny, a six-year-old child, is brought to the emergency room by his parents. They report that about two weeks ago he had a severe sore throat and has never fully recovered. He complains of abdominal discomfort, and he is always tired. They have noticed that he has gained noticeable weight in the last few days, his abdomen and genitalia are swollen, and his urine is brownish. Blood pressure is 180/105, and blood tests show strep antibodies, hypoalbuminemia, and uremia. Urine tests reveal moderate proteinuria, hematuria and red cell casts. He is diagnosed with acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis.

  1. Case Study

Parse’s theory focuses on quality of life and is from each person’s perspective. The concept of valuing at the level of human experiences focuses on the ways persons choose and act on what is important in their lives.

The hospice nurse sat with Ann’s husband, Ben. Ann was resting quietly as the increased dosage of IV pain medication gradually reached its therapeutic level. Ben turned his head and slowly turned, looking out the room’s only window. As he glanced up, a small flicker of light caught his breath. It was a shooting star. A tear fell from the corner of his eye, and he turned to Ann. The nurse sensed that something significant to Ann and Ben was unfolding. Shuffling to Ann’s bedside, he took her small, fragile hand in his. These hands had rocked cradles, burped babies, and groomed the horses she loved to ride. Gently holding her hand, he turned to the nurse. “She would ride like the wind was chasing her.” Looking back to Ann, his voice broke, choking back tears. “Ann, Ann, I saw Jessie…Jessie is calling.” Ben turned, “Jessie was our daughter. She died having a baby that was too big. When she died, it was a pitch-black night. Cold, so cold, the baby died too, a little boy, named him Abe, Jr. after Jessie’s husband. I took Ann outside so she could cry to God above and there in this dark sky we saw two falling stars…together…just falling. We knew it had to be Jessie and Abe…two angels to light up the night.” Ben turned back as a deep sigh escaped from Ann’s lips. A soft smile remained as she joined Jessie and Abe.

  • Based on this case study, how would the nurse actualize Parse’s theory of Human Becoming?

  • What are the characteristics of a human becoming nurse?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of this theory of nursing?

  • From the nursing theories we have discussed, what additional theory would you apply to this case study? Develop a plan of care to include both nursing theories (be specific and provide reasons)

This section should have a level header Additional theory. Why did you select this theory? How can you apply it to this case study? Again, make sure to use key words from the theory. Make sure you have a conclusion paragraph that sums up the content of your paper and has a level one header Conclusion.

The APA formatted paper should include 2 outside references and your book. The essay should be between 1250 and 1500 words in length.
