Quantitative Annotated Bibliography

Assignment 3: Quantitative Annotated Bibliography

In this week’s discussion question you were asked to consider a potential problem (appropriate to your role option) that you would like to investigate through nursing research. For this assignment you will review current research from South’s Online Library and provide a critical evaluation on that research through an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a brief summary and analysis of the journal article reviewed. For more information on annotated bibliographies please visit Purdue’s OWL: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/01/

A total of four annotated bibliographies are to be submitted (not to exceed one page each). The articles must come from nursing scholarly literature and may not be older than 5 years since publication. Please note that the articles must be research based and reflect a quantitative methodology (review our reading assignments). Web pages, magazines, textbooks, and other books are not acceptable.

Each annotation must address the following critical elements:

  • Explanation of the main purpose and scope of the cited work
  • Brief description of the research conducted
  • Value and significance of the work (e.g., study’s findings, scope of the research project) as a contribution to the subject under consideration
  • Possible shortcomings or bias in the work
  • Conclusions or observations reached by the author
  • Summary as to why this research lends evidence to support the potential problem identified specific to your role option.

Please submit to the W1 Assignment 3 Dropbox by Monday, January 2, 2017.

Design and Samplin

Elements of Quantitative Research: Design and Samplin

The focus of the Week 3 discussion is on two important elements of quantitative research studies- design and sampling. The approach or design, quantitative or qualitative, also applies to EBP projects. Both quantitative and qualitative have different designs or traditions that fall under these two broad categories.

Select a single-study quantitative research study article related to your specialty track and provide the permalink to the article. Then discuss each of the following items.

  • Identify whether the research study design is experimental, quasiexperimental, or nonexperimental. Provide the rationale for your answer.
  • Identify the appropriate representation for the research study article you selected using the nomenclature of X for intervention, O for observation and data collection, and R for random a assignment to a research study group.
  • Identify the type of sampling (probability vs. nonprobability) that was used in the research study article you selected.
  • Identify one advantage and one disadvantage to the sampling type used (probability vs. nonprobability).
  • Identify whether there was random assignment to research study groups in the research study article you have selected.
  • If random assignment to groups was used, how does this strengthen the research study design?

Communicable Disease Selection

Write a paper (2,000-2,500 words) in which you apply the concepts of   epidemiology and nursing research to a communicable disease. Refer to   “Communicable Disease Chain,” “Chain of   Infection,” and the CDC website for assistance when completing   this assignment.

Communicable Disease Selection

Choose one communicable disease from the options below.

  1. Chickenpox
  2. Tuberculosis
  3. Influenza
  4. Mononucleosis
  5. Hepatitis B
  6. HIV
  7. Ebola
  8. Measles
  9. Polio
  10. Influenza

Epidemiology Paper Requirements

Address the following:

  1. Describe the chosen communicable disease, including causes,     symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment, and the     demographic of interest (mortality, morbidity, incidence, and     prevalence). Is this a reportable disease? If so, provide details     about reporting time, whom to report to, etc.
  2. Describe the     social determinants of health and explain how those factors     contribute to the development of this disease.
  3. Discuss the     epidemiologic triangle as it relates to the communicable disease you     have selected. Include the host factors, agent factors (presence or     absence), and environmental factors. Are there any special     considerations or notifications for the community, schools, or     general population?
  4. Explain the role of the community     health nurse (case finding, reporting, data collection, data     analysis, and follow-up) and why demographic data are necessary to     the health of the community.
  5. Identify at least one national     agency or organization that addresses the communicable disease     chosen and describe how the organizations contribute to resolving or     reducing the impact of disease.
  6. Discuss a global     implication of the disease. How is this addressed in other countries     or cultures? Is this disease endemic to a particular area? Provide     an example.

A minimum of three peer-reviewed or professional references is required.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA   Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

The Application of Data to Problem-Solving

The Application of Data to Problem-Solving

In the modern era, there are few professions that do not to some extent rely on data. Stockbrokers rely on market data to advise clients on financial matters. Meteorologists rely on weather data to forecast weather conditions, while realtors rely on data to advise on the purchase and sale of property. In these and other cases, data not only helps solve problems, but adds to the practitioner’s and the discipline’s body of knowledge.

Of course, the nursing profession also relies heavily on data. The field of nursing informatics aims to make sure nurses have access to the appropriate date to solve healthcare problems, make decisions in the interest of patients, and add to knowledge.

In this Discussion, you will consider a scenario that would benefit from access to data and how such access could facilitate both problem-solving and knowledge formation.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the concepts of      informatics and knowledge work as presented in the Resources.
  • Consider a hypothetical scenario      based on your own healthcare practice or organization that would require      or benefit from the access/collection and application of data. Your      scenario may involve a patient, staff, or management problem or gap.

By tomorrow 2/26/20 5pm, post a minimum of 550 words essay in APA format with at least three scholarly references from the list of required readings below. Include the level one headers as numbered below:

1)  Post a description of the focus of your scenario.

2) Describe the data that could be used and how the data might be collected and accessed.

3) What knowledge might be derived from that data?

4) How would a nurse leader use clinical reasoning and judgment in the formation of knowledge from this experience?

2. Write a few sentences describing the first relationship (without using names).

3.  Write three (3)  paragraphs about this relationship explaining  the costs, rewards, interdependence, and commitment.  Be sure to include:

Material Rewards
Time Rewards
Health Rewards
Emotional Rewards

Material Costs
Time Costs
Health Costs
Emotional Costs

4.  Write a few sentences describing the second relationship (without using names).

5. Write three (3)  paragraphs about this relationship explaining  the costs and rewards (listed above), interdependence, and commitment.

Case Study

Case Study 1

Case Study 1

Ms. A. is an apparently healthy 26-year-old white woman. Since the beginning of the current golf season, Ms. A has noted increased shortness of breath and low levels of energy and enthusiasm. These symptoms seem worse during her menses. Today, while playing in a golf tournament at a high, mountainous course, she became light-headed and was taken by her golfing partner to the emergency clinic. The attending physician’s notes indicated a temperature of 98 degrees F, an elevated heart rate and respiratory rate, and low blood pressure. Ms. A states, “Menorrhagia and dysmenorrheal have been a problem for 10-12 years, and I take 1,000 mg of aspirin every 3 to 4 hours for 6 days during menstruation.” During the summer months, while playing golf, she also takes aspirin to avoid “stiffness in my joints.”

Laboratory values are as follows:

Hemoglobin = 8 g/dl

Hematocrit = 32%

Erythrocyte count = 3.1 x 10/mm

RBC smear showed microcytic and hypochromic cells

Reticulocyte count = 1.5%

Other laboratory values were within normal limits.

Question

Considering the circumstances and the preliminary workup, what type of anemia does Ms. A most likely have? In an essay of 500-750 words, explain your answer and include rationale.

ethical considerations

Use the practice problem and a quantitative, peer-reviewed research article you identified in the Topic 1 assignment to complete this assignment.

In a 1000-1,250 word essay, summarize the study, explain the ways in which the findings might be used in nursing practice, and address ethical considerations associated with the conduct of the study.

Refer to the resource “Research Critique Guidelines” for suggested headings and content for your paper.

facilitators to communication.

Chapter: 24.Putting it All Together   Examining the patient

  1. Give examples of blockers and facilitators to communication.
  2. Outline the steps involved in building rapport before performing an examination.
  3. List cultural considerations when taking a history and performing a physical examination.
  4. Differentiate between the human and the scientific understanding of illness.

Name three observations that a human can make better than a machine.

  1. Discuss the phrase “Deal with the total person.”
  2. Discuss comfort and privacy issues related to positioning during the examination.
  3. Review ways to maintain privacy during the examination process.
  4. Discuss methods to reduce anxiety in persons of various ages during the examination process.

You overhear another student complaining about how frustrated she was during her first practice examination of an infant. “He was sleeping when it was time to begin the examination,” she explains. “I woke him up so I could get started, but then he started crying. He finally quit crying, but by then I’d already lost a lot of time.” What critique can you offer for the scenario? What advice do you have for this student examiner?

When does the process of inspection begin with the patient?

The physical examination of an older patient should include mental status evaluation with particular attention to which three areas?

For children who are small enough, where should they be examined?

The child’s ability at any age to react socially offers clues to which two types of well-being?

What does observing a child playing on the floor afford us?

KM is a 46-year-old male patient who presents for a routine physical examination. He presents today without complaints. He wants to be sure that he is on the right track to maintain his health because he is in his fourth decade of life.

1- What components of the exam would be completed with the patient seated and the back exposed?

2- You are preparing to complete a rectal examination. What are the possible positions for this examination?

3- Describe the components of the rectal examination.
