The purpose of this assignment is to describe, evaluate and discuss application of a nursing grand or mid-range theory. This assignment also provides the learner an opportunity to connect theory and research to nursing phenomena. Learners will develop an 8-10 page paper (excluding the title page and references) using APA style to address the elements listed below.

Theory/Author Name and Background

  1. Select a Grand or Mid-Range Theory that is appropriate to your practice setting.
  2. Describe the theorist’s background in detail and discuss how their experiences have impacted the theory development.
  3. Examine crucial references for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authors writing about the selected theory.
  4. Identify the phenomenon of concern or problems addressed by the theory.

Theory Description

  1. Explain whether the theory uses deductive, inductive or retroductive reasoning. Provide evidence to support your conclusion.
  2. Describe the major concepts of the theory. How are they defined? (theoretically and/or operationally) Is the author consistent in the use of the concepts and other terms in the theory?
  3. Interpret how the concepts are defined. Implicitly or explicitly?
  4. Examine the relationships (propositions) among the major concepts.

  1. Identify explicit and implicit assumptions (values/beliefs) underlying the theory. On what assumptions does the theory build?

/regional boards of nursing

Board of nursing (bon) exist in all 50 states, the district of columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the northern mariana island, and the virgin islands. Similar entities may also exist for different region. The mission of BON is the protection of the public through the regulation of nursing practice. Bons put into practice state/region regulation for nurses that, among other things, lay out the requirements for licensure and define the scope of nursing practice in that state/region.

It can be a valuable exercise to compare regulations among various state/regional boards of nursing. Doing so can help share insights that could be useful should there be future changes in a state/region. In addition, nurses may find the need to be licensed in multiple states or regions.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the mission of state/regional boards of nursing as the protection of the public through the regulation of nursing practice.
  • Consider how key regulations may impact nursing practice.
  • Review key regulations for nursing practice of your state’s/region’s board of nursing and those of at least one other state/region and select at least two APRN regulations to focus on for this Discussion..

PRN 1555 – Case Study odule 02 DiscussionE.S. is a 23-year-old female from El Salvador who migrated to the United States with her sister (now 17) in 2011. They fled El Salvador due to crime and gang violence. E.S is being admitted to the hospital on a 72-hour-hold.

E.S. was referred to a psychiatrist by her primary physician for an evaluation of possible Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The symptoms she was experiencing at the time included: trouble falling asleep, frequent awakening, nightmares, awakening in cold sweats, and crying out in the middle of the night that someone was trying to kill her. Her appointment was set for next month. Since the referral, she has become increasingly agitated. She was brought to the ER after trying to run in front of a car. She is accompanied by her sister and 25-year-old boyfriend.

Her boyfriend speaks and interprets for the sisters. E.S. and her sister do not speak English. Her brother reports that E.S. has had frequent lapses of memory, that she does not “make sense”, that the house is a mess and that she has wandered off and gotten lost three times in the last few months. The brother says that he feels that E.S. should be taken care of by his family when he leaves the hospital.

In the first 24 hours of hospitalizations, E.S. is pacing the room frequently and often looks out the window. Bruises were noted on her back and arms. When meals are served, E.S. will ignore it or throw the tray on the floor. She refuses to take any medications. She has had three incidents of self-injurious behavior. On September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks created a grave disaster that included the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York. The day after 9/11, epidemiologists were asked to assess the environment around Ground Zero for potential hazards that might put those engaged in rescue and recovery at risk of harm. Beside the dust, what toxins might be in the air? Was the air quality safe or should rescue workers wear canister respirators or particle masks? What other protections might be necessary in the days following the disaster?

In this Discussion, you will look at the impact of a disaster through the lens of an epidemiologist, addressing such questions as, “What epidemiological considerations arise in the wake of a disaster? And, what makes disaster planning or emergency preparedness effective in terms of mitigating or preventing negative aftereffects?”
