Basic Financial Calculations

Assignment: Application: Basic Financial Calculations

Before you learned algebra, you first had to learn basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Similarly, before you can fully understand the finances of a health care organization, you first need to be able to apply basic financial calculations used in almost all domains of accounting. A firm grasp of these accounting concepts will better enable you to confidently make budgetary and resource decisions. In this Assignment, you complete calculations that will familiarize you with some of the necessary basic accounting concepts.

Based on the information and financial statements below, calculate the following financial ratios in an Excel Spreadsheet:

= Total Current Assets / Total Current Liabilities

= Cash / (Total Operating Expense / 365 days)

= Accounts Receivable / (Net Patient Service Revenue / 365)

= Accumulated Depreciation / Depreciation Expense

= [Long Term] Debt / Net Assets

= [Long Term] Debt / Total Assets

= Net Patient Service Revenue / Gross Patient Service Revenue

= Gain or (Loss) from Operations / Net Patient Service Revenue

Note: For those Assignments in this course that require you to perform calculations you must:
Use the ‘Week 3 Application Assignment Template’ from your Learning Resources
Show all your calculations and formulas in the spreadsheet

A title and reference page are NOT needed in this assignment. Put your name and assignment at the top of the Excel spreadsheet.

For those not comfortable with the use of Microsoft Excel, this week’s Optional Resources suggest several tutorials.

Plan to Address Health Issue

This week, you will compare the strategies identified in Week 4 with evidence-based practices and evaluate a working group for the implementation of your proposed strategies. You will also create a master plan for addressing your health issue based on the individual project components you completed throughout this course.

In Week 1, you selected and analyzed a health issue, explaining the populations or groups most affected by it. In Week 2, you examined the behavioral and environmental risk factors related to your selected health issue. In Week 3, you analyzed the predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling behavioral risk factors for the selected health issue. In Week 4, you identified strategies to address each of these three behavioral risk factors as well as assessed the capacity of the community and community resources for change. This week, the focus of your final project will be to compare these strategies with evidence-based practices and evaluate a working group for the implementation of your proposed strategies. You will also combine the ideas from the papers developed from Week 1 through Week 5 to create a plan that could have a significant impact on the health issue you have selected.

Week 5 Part 1: Attached as Plan to Address Health Issue

Week 5 Part 2:

Compile all the final project components completed from Week 1 through Week 5 in a single 20–page paper (double spaced).

Complete the following:

Write a 1–2-page executive summary of the program plan. The executive summary should be written keeping a lay audience in mind.
Create one or more graphic organizers for the planning model, following the framework of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model.
Review the material and make necessary edits to improve flow of thought and clarity. Use headings and subheadings to organize the various sections of the paper. Be sure to conduct a grammar and spelling check.
Write an introduction, a summary, and include a separate title page and a page for references.

Psychotherapy With Children and Adolescents

Week 9: Psychotherapy With Children and Adolescents

Approximately 1 in 5 children and adolescents have a mental health disorder, which may lead to issues at home, school, and other areas of their lives (Prout & Fedewa, 2015). When working with this population, it is important to recognize that children and adolescents are not “mini adults” and should not be treated as such. Psychotherapy with these clients is often more complex than psychotherapy with the general adult population, particularly in terms of communication. As a result, strong therapeutic relationships are essential to success.

This week, as you explore psychotherapy with children and adolescents, you assess clients presenting with disruptive behaviors. You also examine therapies for treating these clients and consider potential outcomes. Finally, you develop diagnoses for clients receiving psychotherapy and consider legal and ethical implications of counseling these clients.

Discussion: Counseling Adolescents

The adolescent population is often referred to as “young adults,” but in some ways, this is a misrepresentation. Adolescents are not children, but they are not yet adults either. This transition from childhood to adulthood often poses many unique challenges to working with adolescent clients, particularly in terms of disruptive behavior. In your role, you must overcome these behaviors to effectively counsel clients. For this Discussion, as you examine the Disruptive Behaviors media in this week’s Learning Resources, consider how you might assess and treat adolescent clients presenting with disruptive behavior.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Assess      clients presenting with disruptive behavior
  • Analyze      therapeutic approaches for treating clients presenting with disruptive      behavior
  • Evaluate      outcomes for clients presenting with disruptive behavior

To prepare:

  • Review      this week’s Learning Resources and reflect on the insights they provide.
  • View      the media, Disruptive Behaviors. Select one of the four case      studies and assess the client.
  • For      guidance on assessing the client, refer to pages 137-142 of the Wheeler      text in this week’s Learning Resources.

Note: To complete this Discussion, you must assess the client, but you are not required to submit a formal Comprehensive Client Assessment.

Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues’ postings. Begin by clicking on the “Post to Discussion Question” link and then select “Create Thread” to complete your initial post. Remember, once you click Submit, you cannot delete or edit your own posts, and cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking Submit!

By Day 3

Post an explanation of your observations of the hyperactive adolescent in the case study you selected, including behaviors that align to the criteria in DSM-5. Then, explain therapeutic approaches you might use with this client, including psychotropic medications if appropriate. Finally, explain expected outcomes for the client based on these therapeutic approaches. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

ETHICAL AND LEGAL PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTHCARE

Module 1 – SLP

INTRODUCTION TO ETHICAL AND LEGAL PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTHCARE

As a healthcare professional, you are among a group of frontline workers. Frontline workers are the backbone of effective health systems. In fact, according to Frontline Health Workers Coalition (2018), “frontline workers play a critical role in providing local context for proven health solutions, and they connect with families and communities to the health system.” Successful policy advocacy and creation is often encouraged by frontline healthcare workers since they are the individuals who interact with the consumers (patients) the most. Your knowledge and perspective are vital to policy and lawmakers as a voice for healthcare consumers and for providing validation/opposition to laws and policy.

Recently the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services announced the “Conscience and Religious Freedom Division” of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The office’s stated goal is to “protect institutions and people who refuse to provide medical assistance based on religious objections.” As noted by HHS (2018), the office is intended to protect religious beliefs. As with most policies, there are opponents and proponents. In general, supporters advocate that the office will protect against religious discrimination while opponents believe the bill will allow for open discrimination against women and LGBTQ individuals.

Information about the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division can be found at the following source: https://www.hhs.gov/conscience/index.html

Conduct additional research on Conscience and Religious Freedom. For your Module 1 SLP assignment, you are to use reasoning (from a healthcare professional perspective) and ethical principles (i.e., Religious Ethics, Normative Ethics, Descriptive Ethics, Applied Ethics, etc.) to compose a 2-page letter to your local Congressman/Congresswoman either in support of or opposition to Conscience and Religious Freedom. This should not be opinion (e.g., avoid “I think” in your paper), but a supported analysis. Your letter should address the following:

  1. Effectiveness or ineffectiveness of Conscience and Religious Freedom to the population that you as a healthcare professional serve.
  2. Rationale for your support/opposition.
  3. Ethical principles that support your position and supporting rationale (why).
  4. Suggestions or recommendations.

Note: You are not graded on your support or opposition, but rather your critical thinking skills in supporting your position, and application of ethical principles. You may also think about referencing pivotal Supreme Court decisions as well (review background cases and supporting information in the Module 1 Background).

Clinical question

“The thoughtful development of a well-structured EBP question is important because the question drives the strategies used to search for evidence”. (Dearholt & Dang, 2012, p.64). My question is: Will Congestive Heart Failure patients discharged from the hospital increase the chance of not being readmitted within 30 days with follow up care that includes post discharge telephone calls for support?

P- (Patient, Population)-Congestive Heart Failure Patients

I-(Intervention)-Follow up phone call at 48 and 72 hours post discharge

C-(Comparison with current practice)-No follow up telephone calls for support.

O-(Desired outcome)-Reduce the number of Readmissions

Diversity and Health Assessments

Discussion: Diversity and Health Assessments

In May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained—from her observations and her personal experience as a black woman—that many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “Many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012).

Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the health care field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and health care professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity.

In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds.

Case 1

JC, an at-risk 86-year-old Asian male is physically and financially dependent on his daughter, a single mother who has little time or money for her father’s health needs. He has a hx of hypertension (HTN), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), b12 deficiency, and chronic prostatitis. He currently takes Lisinopril 10mg QD, Prilosec 20mg QD, B12 injections monthly, and Cipro 100mg QD. He comes to you for an annual exam and states “I came for my annual physical exam, but do not want to be a burden to my daughter.”

Case 2

TJ, a 32-year-old pregnant lesbian, is being seen for an annual physical exam and has been having vaginal discharge. Her pregnancy has been without complication thus far. She has been receiving prenatal care from an obstetrician. She received sperm from a local sperm bank. She is currently taking prenatal vitamins and takes Tylenol over the counter for aches and pains on occasion. She a strong family history of diabetes. Gravida 1; Para 0; Abortions 0.

Case 3

MR, a 23-year-old Native American male comes in to see you because he has been having anxiety and wants something to help him. He has been smoking “pot” and says he drinks to help him too. He tells you he is afraid that he will not get into Heaven if he continues in this lifestyle. He is not taking any prescriptions medications and denies drug use. He has a positive family history of diabetes, hypertension, and alcoholism.

To prepare:

· Reflect on your experiences as a nurse and on the information provided in this week’s Learning Resources on diversity issues in health assessments.

· Select one of the three case studies. Reflect on the provided patient information.

· Reflect on the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient you selected.

· Consider how you would build a health history for the patient. What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patient’s background, lifestyle, and culture? Develop five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

· Think about the challenges associated with communicating with patients from a variety of specific populations. What strategies can you as a nurse employ to be sensitive to different cultural factors while gathering the pertinent information?

By Day 3

Write Plsease include subheading

an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you selected.

Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why.

Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

Abdominal Assessment

In this assignment, you will analyze a SOAP note case study that describes abnormal findings in patients seen in a clinical setting. You will consider what history should be collected from the patients, as well as which physical exams and diagnostic tests should be conducted. You will also formulate a differential diagnosis with several possible conditions.

Abdominal Assessment

SUBJECTIVE:

· CC: “My stomach hurts, I have diarrhea and nothing seems to help.”

· HPI: JR, 47 yo WM, complains of having generalized abdominal pain that started 3 days ago. He has not taken any medications because he did not know what to take. He states the pain is a 5/10 today but has been as much as 9/10 when it first started. He has been able to eat, with some nausea afterwards.

· PMH: HTN, Diabetes, hx of GI bleed 4 years ago

· Medications: Lisinopril 10mg, Amlodipine 5 mg, Metformin 1000mg, Lantus 10 units qhs

· Allergies: NKDA

· FH: No hx of colon cancer, Father hx DMT2, HTN, Mother hx HTN, Hyperlipidemia, GERD

· Social: Denies tobacco use; occasional etoh, married, 3 children (1 girl, 2 boys)

OBJECTIVE:

· VS: Temp 99.8; BP 160/86; RR 16; P 92; HT 5’10”; WT 248lbs

· Heart: RRR, no murmurs

· Lungs: CTA, chest wall symmetrical

· Skin: Intact without lesions, no urticaria

· Abd: soft, hyperctive bowel sounds, pos pain in the LLQ

· Diagnostics: None

ASSESSMENT:

· Left lower quadrant pain

· Gastroenteritis

· PLAN: This section is not required for the assignments in this course (NURS 6512) but will be required for future courses.

To prepare:

With regard to the SOAP note case study provided:

· Review this week’s Learning Resources, and consider the insights they provide about the case study.

· Consider what history would be necessary to collect from the patient in the case study.

· Consider what physical exams and diagnostic tests would be appropriate to gather more information about the patient’s condition. How would the results be used to make a diagnosis?

· Identify at least five possible conditions that may be considered in a differential diagnosis for the patient.

To complete:

1. Analyze the subjective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.

2. Analyze the objective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.

3. Is the assessment supported by the subjective and objective information? Why or Why not?

4. What diagnostic tests would be appropriate for this case and how would the results be used to make a diagnosis?

Would you reject/accept the current diagnosis? Why or why not? Identify three possible conditions that may be considered as a differential diagnosis for this patient. Explain your reasoning using at least 3 different references from current evidence based literature
