  1. Read Finkelman (2016), Chapter 13: Improving Teamwork: Collaboration, Coordination, and Conflict Resolution, section on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, pp. 324-333. Watch tutorial below.
  2. Write a 5-7 page paper (not including the title or References pages). Follow APA format. Consult your APA manual, and consider using the APA resources provided by Chamberlain. Cite the course textbook and two scholarly sources.
  3. Observe nurses in a care delivery setting. Identify a recurring conflict with the potential to negatively impact patient care. This should be from your practice setting or prelicensure experiences.
  4. Provide details of what happened, including who was involved, what was said, where it occurred, and what was the outcome that led you to decide the conflict was unresolved.

He was treated in the Emergency Department with aspirin and two doses of sublingual nitroglycerin. Chest pain improved with nitroglycerin administration. IV infusion of normal saline was started in the Emergency Department and is running at 25 mL/hour. Ordered lab values are pending. Provider wants to be called as soon as the labs are available. Patient is receiving oxygen at 4 L/min with SpO2 values at 97%. Chest pain was last rated as a “0” following second nitroglycerin dose and nitroglycerine patch 0.4 mg. He has been admitted to the Telemetry Unit.

The goal of using evidence-based research findings is to enhance safety and quality of patient care and ensure optimal outcomes are achieved. It is not uncommon to hear a nurse say, “why change it as we’ve always done it this way.” However, this is no longer acceptable in today’s practice environment. The profession of nursing has evolved, and the expectation is that the professional nurse has a scientific foundation to support the care that is provided. As the profession of nursing continues to evolve and engage in health care transformation, baccalaureate-prepared nurses are expanding taking on leadership roles that include incorporating EBPs. To be able to do this, the nurse needs to understand the criteria and makes a resource credible, as this is crucial when deciding if the research is valid and reliable for implementation into health care settings.

This type of systematic approach to incorporating evidence-based findings allows nurses to make clinical and operational decisions based upon the best available evidence. When the most up-to-date evidence-based findings are utilized, patient-centered care improves outcomes and enhances the patient experience.

Simulation technology

Simulation technology has been transformative in nursing education. Through the use of simulation, nurses can repeatedly practice skills and gain clinical confidence in a risk-free environment. Simulation, however, is not just for health care professionals. How can nurses leverage simulation technology for patient and family education? Share your experiences and ideas for leveraging simulation technology for patient education.

Simulation technology could be introduced into to a pediatric office to teach new parents how to respond in emergency situations. By teaching a parent how to react in an emergency, before one occurs, the situation could be less traumatic and scary, if the parent knows how to respond. The nurse or physician could use simulation or manikins to teach a new parent how to react if their baby or child is choking. Before teaching the parent, the educator would use the four major components of simulation: Pre-brief, enactment, debrief and assessment (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The educator would pre-brief the parent on what is to be expected to happen and how to respond in a choking scenario. Then the parent would demonstrate what was taught. After the return demonstration, the provider and parent would have a one to one discussion. Simulation could also be used in teaching the parents and children newly diagnosed with diabetes, how to give insulin injections.

Health care professionals

Health care professionals play a crucial role in helping to prevent and control infectious disease. Nurses are an important factor in helping to prevent the spread of infection. As a nurse it is extremely important to understand the infection process, the chain of infection, and prevention techniques.

In the TWO scenarios below, describe in paragraph form what you as a health care provider would do in these situations. Describe what was done right, what was done incorrectly, and what education needs to be discussed in each scenario.

Scenario 1

A man is recovering from a minor surgical procedure. His son, daughter-in-law, and grandson come to visit him. His daughter-in-law is suffering from what appears to be a bad cold and, although hospital policies prohibit children under the age of 10 from visiting patients in this ward, the 3-year-old grandson still came up.

You notice that the woman is sneezing and coughing into her hands. You also notice that the child keeps moving from his mother’s lap to the patient’s lap in the hospital bed. In addition, you observe that the woman is changing the television stations on the remote control to find something the child can watch.

Scenario 2

A charge nurse on a medical/surgical unit approaches a computer and notices that the keyboard is visibly soiled. She goes to a supply closet to get some disinfectant wipes to clean the keys. When she returns, she notes that a nurse is sitting at the computer using the soiled keyboard. As she watches, the nurse picks up a patient chart, makes a note, and then returns to the keyboard. When she is finished typing, the nurse walks away from the computer and heads for one of the patient rooms.
