The Immigrant Experience

Begin thinking about what it would have been like to be a member of one of the immigrant groups discussed so far. Then think about your responses to the following queries:

• What would have been your expectations from America?
• What would have been your fears?
• What sort of reception would you have received (as a representative of your race, gender, and nationality)?
• Would you have tried to assimilate? Why or why not? If so, how?

Prepare an outline with your responses. Use a pre-writing technique such as bubbling, freewriting, or outlining to organize your thoughts on this imagined experience. These notes will form the foundation of your course project.
