Practicum Assignment 1: Self-Assessment of Clinical Skills
A self-assessment is an opportunity for you to review what you have learned in the program, evaluate your clinical skills, and develop goals before exiting the NP program. For this assignment, you will complete the Risk Control Self-Assessment Checklist for Nurse Practitioners and identify your areas of strength and weakness. You also will explain how you plan to improve on these weaknesses, as well as how you plan to master clinical skills you have not obtained prior to exiting NP program.

Complete the Risk Control Self-Assessment Checklist for Nurse Practitioners
Review preceptor and faculty evaluations in Meditrek for all completed clinical courses
Consider your strengths and weaknesses
Review types of patients treated and clinical procedures performed

ourse Project: Part 4—Final Concept Paper
In Week 1, you described a program for the health problem and identified the right division for it, and in Week 2, you provided factual information for understanding the health problem. In Week 3, you outlined a marketing plan for the new department and developed a staffing plan. This week, you will develop the final two components of your concept paper, a budget, and an executive summary.
You will then complete the final concept paper for the proposed program due for senior management review. To submit the final paper, compile all the project reports done in Weeks 1 to 3 and Week 5 in a 10- to 15-page report. Include a title page and list of references on separate pages.
Budget
In this final week, you will develop a proposed budget of $150,000 for the first year of the program and complete the final concept paper for the proposed program due for senior management review.
The budget should identify the program’s anticipated expenses for the year ahead. Budget line items should be consistent with the proposed program and staffing plan.
You can visit the Budget Samples category in the Webliography to review some samples.
Using the readings for the week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, complete the following tasks:
Create a proposed budget of $150,000 for the first year of the proposed program including the cost for personnel, supplies, education materials, marketing costs, and so on in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. You may transfer your budget to your report.
Justify the cost for each item of the proposed budget in a budget narrative.
Executive Summary
The executive summary will serve as a one page overview of your proposed program. You may use the executive summary to draw in your reader—the senior management team. It should provide a compelling argument as to why your proposal should be funded. Be sure to include a brief overview of each component of your proposal: goals, needs statement, marketing plan, staffing plan, and budget.

The final paper should include the following sections:

Standardized Coding Systems
As a result of the fragmented nature of the health care system, professionals in various specialty areas of medicine have developed their own unique sets of terminology to communicate within that specialty. In the past, limited attention has been given to codifying practices in order for them to be understood and utilized across disciplines or through different information technology systems. The implementation of a federally mandated electronic medical records system, therefore, poses a challenge to nursing professionals and others who must be prepared to utilize standardized codes for the new system. Why are coding standards important for promoting consistent, high-quality care?
According to Rutherford (2008, para. 15), “Improved communication with other nurses, health care professionals, and administrators of the institution in which nurses work is a key benefit of using a standardized nursing language.” In this Discussion you consider the reasoning behind and the value of standardized codification.
To prepare
Review the information in Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice. Determine which set of terminologies are appropriate for your specialty or area of expertise.
Reflect on the importance of continuity in terminology and coding systems.
In the article, “Standardized Nursing Language: What Does It Mean for Nursing Practice?” the author recounts a visit to a local hospital to view its implementation of a new coding system. One of the nurses commented to her, “We document our care using standardized nursing languages but we don’t fully understand why we do” (Rutherford, 2008, para. 1). Consider how you would inform this nurse (and others like her) of the importance of standardized nursing terminologies.
Reflect on the value of using a standard language in nursing practice. Consider if standardization can be limited to a specialty area or if one standard language is needed across all nursing practice. Then, identify examples of standardization in your own specialty or area of expertise. Conduct additional research using the Walden Library that supports your thoughts on standardization of nursing terminology.
