Learning Activity #1

Maria Artos, a 25-year-old female graduate of Harvard Business School, has just been appointed to the job of Director of IT in a medium size business. Her immediate junior in the business, Anthony Jones, is a 53-year-old long term employee of the business.  He was passed over for the job that Maria Artos now holds.

• First, identify all the leadership challenge issues that might be suggested by this fact pattern.
• As can be imagined, both Artos and Jones could feel uncomfortable since Artos was told that Anthony Jones also applied for the position and Anthony could be resentful for being passed over. Students will create the opening interview/meeting between Artos and Jones on her first day on the job.  Use this week’s course material to create the exchange between Artos and Jones.
• In creating the exchange between Jones and Artos, have Artos deal with all the identified issues using her “leadership relationship building skills”. Note: In responding, consider that the situation is one in which the skills from week five should be employed along with addressing the topic of diversity.

Learning Activity #2

Top executives and board members of a large international bank in New York are meeting to consider three finalists for a new position.  The winning candidate will be in a high- profile job, in charge of a group of top loan officers who recently led the bank into some risky financial arrangements in the Middle East.  Recently, when the value of the dollar fell, the bank took a financial hit because of risky loans made in the company’s Yemen office. 

The board voted to hire someone to directly oversee this group of loan officers and to make sure the necessary due diligence is done on major loans before further commitments are made.  Although the bank prefers that decisions are made as close to the action level as possible, they believe the loan officers have gotten out of hand and need to be reined in.  The average age of the all-male group is 39.  

The effectiveness of the person in this new lead position is considered to be of utmost importance for the bank’s future.  They are also aware that certain cultural differences have made the problem even harder to solve.  The bank needs a candidate who will know how to work with the Yemen employees and at the same time has some knowledge of the customs and language of the country.  After carefully reviewing résumés, the board selected six candidates for the first round of interviews, after which the list of finalists was narrowed to two.  Both candidates seem to have the intellect and experience to handle the job.  One candidate is female and the other male. The male candidate is 34 while the female is 36. Both candidates are attractive and single.

Before the second-round interview, the Board decided to ask you to devise a set of questions that will help elicit information as to how familiar the candidates are with handling the cultural diversity issues the job will present.  In addition to the using the course reading for the week you may want to research some of the cultural bias issues unique to the Yemen culture. (Hint:  consider women in the Arab workplace)

Week 10 eActivity

Dan is a trained paralegal who works for Erie Bank in Lakewood, Ohio. One day, Mary walks into the bank to apply for a mortgage loan to purchase a new house. She and Dan have a long conversation about Mary taking out a mortgage. During the conversation, Mary is concerned that were she to default on her loan, her credit would be destroyed. In response, Dan tells her: Don’t worry about it. If you don’t pay your loan, the only remedy the bank has is to foreclose on the house. The bank cannot go after you personally and your credit score will be unaffected. I’ve been dealing with this issue for years and I’m telling you that this is the Ohio law on the matter. Unfortunately, it turns out that Dan was incorrect. When Mary defaults on her loan the next year, her credit is badly hurt. Mary comes to your office and meets with your supervising attorney, Joe, to discuss the possibility of suing Dan based on his statement to her and her reliance on it. Because Dan sincerely believed that what he was saying was true, Joe immediately rules out the possibility of suing him for fraud or misrepresentation. (Note: This means you should NOT deal with the possibility of suing him for fraud or misrepresentation or the like!) Instead, Mary says to Joe, “Well, Dan isn’t a lawyer. Isn’t it wrong for him to tell me what the Ohio law is when he’s not even a lawyer?” Joe replies, “Well, I know that it’s unethical and even criminal to practice law without a license, but I don’t know if you can sue someone for unauthorized practice of law. I’ll have my star paralegal look into that.” After Mary leaves, Joe asks you to research this question, i.e., whether Mary can sue Dan based on his unauthorized practice of law, and to get back to him with an answer. Please prepare a properly researched essay to answer Joe’s question. An IRAC-style essay is appropriate for this assignment.

The team works for a company that is looking to make an acquisition of another company. The team must make a recommendation as to whether or not the company should make an offer based on the information below. The team must present their recommendation and all supporting information to the executive team.

Select a company (WalMart) with which the team is familiar. This should be a publicly traded company with sufficient financial data available online.

Identify the following information on the selected company:

• Revenues = increasing by 8% each year
• Expenses = increasing by 10% each year
• Tax rate = 25%
• Discount rate = 10%

Part I

Compute and analyze the financial data using a Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet. Make sure all calculations can be seen in the background of the applicable spreadsheet cells. In other words, leave an audit trail so others can see how you arrived at your calculations and analysis. Items should be submitted in Microsoft® Excel®; indicate your recommendation in the Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet:

• Calculate the 5-year projected income.
• Calculate a 5-year projected cash flow.
• Calculate net present value (NPV).
• Calculate the internal rate of return (IRR).
• Determine if the team would recommend acquiring this company based on the 4 calculations above; do you recommend acquiring this company?

Identify a quantifiable measure for the company such as service time, percent of errors, etc. Select one of the following quality control tools to evaluate this data:

• Flow chart
• Cause and Effect (Fishbone) Diagram
• Pareto Chart
• Control Charts
• Histograms
• Scatter Diagrams

Part II

Create a 16-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, including detailed speaker notes or voiceover:

• Define the answers you calculate in Part I.
• Analyze the results you arrived at in Part I.
• Interpret the answers you calculated.
• Present the rationale behind each item and why it supports the team’s decision.
• Describe the relationship between NPV and IRR. Hint: The key factor is the discount rate used.

Format your assignment consistent with APA guidelines. Your team will present its findings. The presentation is worth 3 points. If you are absent the evening of the presentation, your score will be reduced 3 points.
