An increase in traffic due to world tourism growth puts pressure on transportation facilities and can have adverse effects. These situations in the world vary widely within regions, countries, states, and provinces.

Although tourists use planes, trains, motor coaches, taxis, shuttle buses, boats, and cruise ships to arrive at destinations, other modes of transportation are also an integral part of tourism. One of the most important and easily overlooked is pedestrian travel, or walking. Walking tours have been proven very popular. Cycling is another mode embraced by some travelers and tourist destinations. Trams, cable cars, gondolas, and ski lifts are also additional modes of transportation that are important to specific resorts and destinations. Often many of these modes of transportation are seen as tourist attractions themselves.
