For this assessment, you will research best practices related to a current health care problem. Your selected problem or issue will be utilized again in Assessment 3. 4. View the Assessment Topic Areas | Transcript media piece and select one of the health care problems or issues in the media piece to research. Write a brief overview of the selected topic. In your overview:

  • Describe        the health care problem or issue.

  • Describe        any professional experience you have with this topic.

5. Conduct a search for scholarly or academic peer-reviewed literature related to the topic and describe the criteria you used to search for articles, including the names of the databases you used.

  • Use        keywords related to the health care problem or issue you are researching        to select relevant articles.

6. Assess the credibility of the information sources you find.

9. Analyze the scholarly literature or academic peer-reviewed journal articles using the annotated bibliography organizational format.

  • The        purpose of an annotated bibliography is to document a list of references        along with key information about each one. The detail about the        reference is the annotation. Developing this annotated bibliography will        create a foundation of knowledge about the selected topic.
  • List        the full reference for the source in APA format (author, date, title,        publisher, et cetera) and use APA format for the annotated        bibliography.
  • Make        sure the references are listed in alphabetical order, are double-spaced,        and use hanging indents.
  • Follow        the reference with the annotation.

10. In your annotation:

  • Identify        the purpose of the article.
  • Summarize        the source:
    • What         are the main arguments?
    • What         topics are covered?
  • Include        the conclusions and findings of the article.
  • Write        your annotation in a paragraph form. The annotation should be        approximately 150 words (1 to 3 paragraphs) in length.

11. In a separate paragraph or two at the end of the paper, summarize what you learned from your research.

  • Summarize        the main contributions of the sources you chose and how they enhanced        your knowledge about the topic.

When seeking to identify a patient’s health condition, advanced practice nurses can use a diverse selection of diagnostic tests and assessment tools; however, different factors affect the validity and reliability of the results produced by these tests or tools. Nurses must be aware of these factors in order to select the most appropriate test or tool and to accurately interpret the results.

Not only do these diagnostic tests affect adults, body measurements can provide a general picture of whether a child is receiving adequate nutrition or is at risk for health issues. These data, however, are just one aspect to be considered. Lifestyle, family history, and culture—among other factors—are also relevant. That said, gathering and communicating this information can be a delicate process.
For this Assignment, you will consider the validity and reliability of different assessment tools and diagnostic tests. You will explore issues such as sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. You will also consider examples of children with various weight issues. You will explore how you could effectively gather information and encourage parents and caregivers to be proactive about their children’s health and weight.

To Prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider factors that impact the validity and reliability of various assessment tools and diagnostic tests. You also will review examples of pediatric patients and their families as it relates to BMI.
  • By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to one of the following Assignment options by your Instructor: Adult Assessment Tools or Diagnostic Tests (option 1), or Child Health Case (Option 2). Note: Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your assignments from your Instructor.
  • Search the Walden Library and credible sources for resources explaining the tool or test you were assigned. What is its purpose, how is it conducted, and what information does it gather?
  • Also, as you search the Walden library and credible sources, consider what the literature discusses regarding the validity, reliability, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, ethical dilemmas, and controversies related to the test or tool.
