historical figure

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
  • Reflect on your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment, and consider how the results relate to your leadership traits.

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

  • A description of your core values
  • A personal mission/vision statement
  • An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
  • A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen
  • A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Be sure to incorporate your colleagues’ feedback on your CliftonStrengths Assessment from this Module’s Discussion 2.

Preparing for Change

Preparing for Change

What steps might be utilized to move a practice issue from development and design through implementation to the realization of positive outcomes? How does theory provide a framework? What barriers might you encounter?

To prepare:

  • Review the theories and frameworks (i.e.,      change, organizational, behavioral) presented in Chapter 3 of the course      text, Translation of Evidence into Nursing and Health Care      Practice, and conduct additional research of your own. What insights do      these theories provide regarding how to take your practice issue from      development and design through implementation to the realization of      positive outcomes?
  • Think about your practicum setting and evaluate      the readiness for change in this environment. Identify barriers and      facilitators for change.
  • Consider strategies to address the barriers and      assess why they might be effective based on theory.

By tomorrow Wednesday 10/17/18 at 12 pm, write a minimum of 550 words essays in APA format with at least 3 references (see attached files) from the list of REQUIRED READINGS below. Include the headers as numbered below:

Post a cohesive scholarly response that addresses the following:

1) Assess the readiness for change in your hospital environment. Discuss those factors: (a) barriers and (b) facilitators that need to be considered (see attached chapter 15 in the file area)

Preparing for Change2) Identify a theory or framework that will guide your change efforts. (see attached chapter 3 in the file area)

3) Discuss strategies to address barriers and provide one or more insights regarding why you think they might be effective based on theory.

Client Profile

Case study 1

Client Profile

Mrs. Harriet is a 68-year-old woman who is alert and oriented. Allergies are Erythromycin. She presents to the emergency department with complaints of chest tightness, shortness of breath, cough, and congestion. She states, “I have been having these symptoms for three days now. I have been taking Maximum Strength Robitussin for my cough but it has not helped very much. When I woke up this morning. I felt very weak so I came in to be checked out.” Her vital signs are blood pressure 110/70, pulse 94, respiratory rate of 28, and temperature of 102.7 F. Her oxygen saturation on room air is 92%. She is placed on 2 liters (L) of oxygen by nasal cannula. The HCP prescribes a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG) and chest X-ray (CXR). Laboratory tests prescribed include complete blood count (CBC), basic metabolic panel (BMP), brain natriuretic peptide (B-type natriuretic peptide assay or BNP), total creatine kinase (CK, CPK), creatine kinase-MB (CPK-MB), and troponin. The HCP will also assess blood cultures x 2, AGs on room air, sputum culture and sensitivity (C &S), and asks that the client have a Mantoux (tuberculin, purified protein derivative, or PPD) test.

Case Study

Mrs. Harriet’s ECG shows normal sinus rhythm (NSR) with a heart rate of 98 beats per minute. The CXR reveals a right lower lobe(RLL) infiltrate. Laboratory tests include the following results: white blood cell cot (WBC) 12,2000 cells/mm3, 72& seg neutrophils with a left shift of 11% bands, and a BNP of 50.9 pg/mL. ABGs on room air is pH 7.44, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) 39 mmHg, bicarbonate (HCO3) 26.9 mEq/L, partial pressures of oxygen (PaO2) 58 mmHg, and oxygen saturation (SaO2) of 92%. Results of the sputum culture show Streptococcus pneumoniae. The CPK, CPK-MB, and troponin are all within normal limits. Mrs. Harriet is five feet three inches tall and weighs 224 pounds (101.8 kg). On assessment, the nurse hears expiratory wheezes and rhonchi bilaterally with diminished lung sounds in the right base. Her thoracic (chest) expansion is equal but slightly decreased on inspiration. Accessory muscle retraction is not noted, and she does exhibit central cyanosis. The capillary refill of the client’s nail beds is four seconds.

Mrs. Harrier is admitted with acute bronchitis and pneumonia. The HCP prescribes oxygen via nasal cannula to keep the client’s saturations greater or equal to 95%, Ceftriaxone sodium, Erythromycin, Albuterol, Acetaminophen every four to six hours as needed, bed rest, an 1800 calorie diet, increased oral (PO) fluid intake to 2 to 4 liters per day, coughing and deep breathing exercises and use of the incentive spirometer (IS).

1. Discuss additional assessment data that would help gain a more thorough understanding or Mrs. Harriet’s symptoms?

2. Discuss the causes, pathophysiology, and symptoms of acute bronchitis?

3. Discuss the pathophysiology and causes of pneumonia in general?

4. Compare the defining characteristics of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), and viral pneumonia?

5. Discuss the factors that place Mrs. Harriet at greater risk for the development of pneumonia?

6. Mrs. Harriet asks the nurse to explain what the HCP saw on her chest X-ray. She asks, “The doctor said something about a ‘trate’ he saw on my lung, What did he mean by that?” How would the nurse explain what an infiltrate is?

7. Briefly explain the pathophysiology and identify at least five clinical manifestations of the respiratory diagnosis that is being ruled out for Mrs. Harrier by administering the Mantoux test?

8. While awaiting test results to confirm if Mrs. Harriet has TB, what precautions should be taken when assigning her to a room and providing nursing care?

9. Discuss the measurement of induration that would indicate a positive Mantoux test for Mrs. Harrier. If she tested positive for exposure to TB but did not have assessment findings consistent with active disease, what medication could be prescribed, and what is the benefit of this treatment?

10. The nurse asked Mrs. Harriet if she has been using her incentive spirometer. Mrs. Harriet states, “I tried to use it a couple of times but I think it is broken. When I blow into it, the ball does not go up like I was told it should.” How should the nurse intervene?

11. Briefly discuss the significance of each of the following laboratory results: (a) WBC 12,200 (b) 72%seg neutrophils, (c) left shift of 11% bands, (d) BNP 50.9 (e) results of sputum culture show S. Pneumoniae, (f) CPK WNL, (g) CPK-MB WNL, and (h) troponin WNL

12. Analyze Mrs. Harriet’s ABG results. Determine whether each value is high low or within normal limits: interpret the acid-base balance; determine if there is compensation, and indicate whether the client has hypoxemia.

13. The nurse calls the HCP to request a change in the medications that have been prescribed for Mrs. Harriet. Discuss which medication the nurse is concerned about being unsafe for this client.

14. Provide a rationale for each of the following prescribed components of Mrs. Harriets treatment plan: oxygen to keep the client’s oxygen saturation greater than or equal to 95%, Ceftriaxone sodium, Albuterol, Acetaminophen, bed rest, 1800 calorie diet, increased oral (PO) fluid intake to 2 to 4 liters per day, coughing and deep breathing exercises and use of the incentive spirometer (IS).

15. Mrs. Harriet was taking Dextromethorphan at home to help manage her cough. The HCP did not prescribe continued use of the Dextromethorphan during hospitalization. Explain this omission.

16. If it was learned that Mrs. Harriet has a past medical history of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), how would the HCP’s prescription that oxygen is delivered to keep the client’s oxygen saturation greater than or equal to 95% be changed?

17. Identify three priority nursing diagnoses that should be included in Mrs. Harriet’s plan of care.

18. You are the nurse providing discharge teaching to Mrs. Harriet. Briefly discuss what you will recommend to her regarding seeking follow-up care, lifestyle considerations, and how to help prevent Pneumonia in the future.

Competenc

Investigate your organization’s compliance rate with one specific core measure of your choice and write a 2-3-page (maximum) executive summary analyzing the financial and regulatory impact of organizational compliance with your chosen measure. Include recommendations for improving performance on the measure.

In order to promote safe, caring, patient-centered environments, nurse leaders must both conceptually understand and be proficient at performing a wide variety of leadership skills. Effective nursing leaders develop and maintain awareness of issues that emerge at many levels within and outside of their organizations. In addition to developing self-assessing competencies necessary for their roles, nurse leaders must also acquire organizational and systems leadership skill sets.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 4: Policy, Finance, and Regulations – Understand the scope and role of policy, finance, and regulatory environments in relationship to individual and population outcomes.
    • (IMPORTANT) -Compare the compliance rates of a specific measure for different organizations.
    • (IMPORTANT) -Explain the importance of compliance in terms of policy, regulation, and finance.
  • Competency 5: Communication – Communicate effectively with all members of the health care team, including interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration for quality outcomes.
    • (IMPORTANT) -Write coherently to support a central idea with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics as expected of a nursing professional.
  • Competency 6: Organizational and Systems Management – Apply knowledge of organizational behavior, nursing theory, and systems (micro- and macro-) as appropriate for the scope and role of one’s own practice.
    • (IMPORTANT) -Explain strategies to overcome described organizational barriers to change.
  • Competency 9: Professional Role – Incorporate the qualities, skills, behaviors, and knowledge required to function as a patient advocate, practice high-quality care, assess and evaluate patient outcomes, and provide leadership in improving care.
    • (IMPORTANT) -Identify the stakeholders affected by changes to a specific compliance measure and describe changes that would improve compliance of a specific measure.

Assessment Instructions

For this assessment, write an executive summary analyzing the financial and regulatory impact of organizational compliance with a specific core measure of your choice. The summary must include recommendations for improving performance on the measure.

You must be able to explain the financial implications associated with the measure, as well as its importance in terms of policy, regulation, and finance. This is another good opportunity to consult with a key stakeholder within the organization. Talking to someone who works closely with the organization’s finances can help you develop a deeper understanding of the financial aspects of compliance. You also need to suggest ways your organization can improve compliance and how you would implement changes and overcome obstacles.

This may seem like an enormous undertaking, but you should approach it as if you were to present this information to your supervisor or manager. Keeping in mind that people in these positions do not have time to read a 10–12-page report, you would typically give them only an executive summary of your analyses and recommendations. That means that you will need to be very clear and very concise with the information you choose to include in the executive summary. Say as much as possible with as few words as possible.

Directions

Select a core measure and investigate your organization’s compliance rate with the measure. In your executive summary, address the following:

  1. Compare the compliance rates of your organization with those of other organizations.
  2. Explain why the measure is important in terms of policy, regulation, and finance.
  3. Describe changes that could be made that would improve compliance with the measure.
  4. Identify the stakeholders who would be affected by the changes.
  5. Identify obstacles you would expect to encounter and explain strategies to overcome these obstacles.

Additional Requirements

  • Format: Include a title page and references page. As this is an executive summary, do not use APA style and formatting. To determine the appropriate format, it may be helpful for you to review the documents used in your organization. How do they look? What kind of language is used in memos? These can help guide your development of this executive summary. Certainly, feel free to use bullet points as appropriate.
  • Length: Write a 2–3-page (maximum) summary of your information, not including the title page and references page.
  • References: You must still reference scholarly resources to support your work. Use at least three current scholarly or professional resources.
  • Font: Use 12-point, Times New Roman font.

How healthy is your workplace

How healthy is your workplace?

You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.

There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and examine the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, found on page 20 of Clark (2015).
  • Review and complete the Work Environment Assessment Template in the Resources.
  • QUESTION
  • Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your workplace is or is not civil. Then, describe a situation where you have experienced incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed? Be specific and provide examples.

Assignment Overview

Assignment Overview

How does cognitive development occur? Many attempts have been made to accurately describe children’s cognitive development, and one of the most widely used is Jean Piaget’s theory. According to Piaget, children go through a series of four stages of cognitive development.

In this assignment, you will use a scenario to explain Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development.

Imagine you are going to make cookies with the help of four children. Charlie is 2 years old, Penelope is 6, Isabelle is 9, and Brian is 11.

1. Based upon Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development, how will each child help you in making cookies? For instance, will one child be able to assist in pouring flour into a bowl, whereas another child will simply play with the flour?

2. Identify the developmental stage of each child and describe how each child will assist in making cookies based upon their developmental stage.

Your responses (approximately 250 words)
