Self-Assessment

Details:

This assignment focuses on the importance of self-assessment and reflection.

Self-Assessment

Self-awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self-assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self-leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection as directed below.

Complete each of the following self-assessments. Be sure to document the results of each assessment to assist you in completing the reflection portion of the assignment below.

  1. Emotional Intelligence Assessment: “Emotional Intelligence Test”: http://testyourself.psychtests.com/testid/3038
  2. Personality Assessment: “Personality Traits Test”: http://testyourself.psychtests.com/bin/transfer?req=MnwyMjk2fDE5NTM1MTV8MXwxfDE=&refempt

  6. Diversity Assessment: “Cultural Competence Self-Test”: http://www.healthystartpinellas.org/pdf/Self_Assess_5.pdf

Self-Assessment Reflection

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

In a 750-1,000 word reflective essay, address the following:

  1. Briefly summarize the results of each self-assessment.
  2. Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care, and explain what appeals to you about that style.
  3. Reflect on how you might incorporate elements of that particular style as you exercise leadership in a practice or health care organization setting.
  4. Discuss any particular areas for improvement the assessments helped you identify and some steps for improving your leadership capabilities.

You are required to cite three to five sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Advocating for new policies is an important aspect of the master’s-prepared nurse. For new policies to be compelling they need to be supported by evidence. Supporting data can be used to illustrate why new policies and interventions are needed to help address a specific health issue. Compelling data can help sway the stakeholders and gain support for your policy.
SHOW LESSAnother aspect of advocacy is disseminating new policies and interventions outside of the immediate care environment. This can be done by reaching out to professional organizations as well as academic and professional journals. A letter to the editor is one strategy for disseminating information to a wider audience, and to potentially enlist support throughout the wider professional community.
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

    • Competency 1: Design evidence-based advanced nursing care for achieving high-quality population outcomes.
      • Evaluate the current state of the quality of care and outcomes for a specific issue in a target population.
      • Justify why a developed policy will be vital in improving the quality of care and outcomes for a specific issue in a target population.
    • Competency 2: Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of interprofessional interventions in achieving desired population health outcomes.

  • Toggle DrawerContextNurses have the opportunity to use their skills and develop programs to keep individuals and communities healthy. Health is complex however, and the nurse needs to possess strong advocacy skills to successfully support a cause or interest. The American Nurses Association’s code of ethics (2015) describes the responsibility of a nurse to include working through and with appropriate stakeholders to advocate for the health of people in and out of the work environment. To be an effective advocate, there are several important abilities a nurse must possess, including problem solving, communication, and influencing others. One way a nurse can advocate to a broader population is through effective letter writing, both to legislators and through the media, such as with editorials and research articles.

Throughout this course, you have focused on a specific health issue occurring within a specific population. You researched position papers regarding this health concern, and you developed a health policy proposal to positively impact the health of the affected individuals. It is now time to reach a greater audience regarding your policy proposal.
    Instructions
Develop a letter to the editor of a peer-reviewed academic or professional nursing journal based on the policy proposal that you created for Assessment 2. Choose from one of the journals on the Ultimate List of Nursing Journals (in the Resources) and go to that journal’s Web site to find out the requirements for submitting a letter to the editor, such as format requirements, topics, and word counts. Make sure you select a nursing journal that covers the topic about which you are going to write. If you want to use another journal that is not on this list, please make sure the journal does address health care, because this is the purpose of the assessment.
The goal of your letter is to be informative about the policy that you developed for Assessment 2, while also being persuasive about the need for and benefit of similar policies in other health care settings. The bullet points below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your submission addresses all of them. You may also want to read the Letter to the Editor: Population Health Policy Advocacy Scoring Guide and Guiding Questions: Letter to the Editor: Population Health Policy Advocacy document to better understand how each grading criterion will be assessed.

    • Evaluate the current state of the quality of care and outcomes for a specific issue in a target population.
      • Look back to the data or scenario you used in Assessment 1 to address this criterion.
    • Analyze how the current state of the quality of care and outcomes for a specific issue in a target population necessitates health policy development and advocacy.
    • Justify why a developed policy will be vital in improving the quality of care and outcomes for a specific issue in a target population.
    • Advocate for policy development in other care settings with regard to a specific issue in a target population.
    • Analyze the ways in which interprofessional aspects of a developed policy will support efficient and effective achievement of desired outcomes for the target population.
    • Communicate in a professional and persuasive manner, writing content clearly and logically with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
    • Integrate relevant sources to support assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using current APA style (or the journal’s preferred style).
    • Additional Requirements
The submission requirements for your editorial will depend on the journal you choose. To find out the requirements, go to the journal’s Web site. There should be a section regarding submissions that will address how to format letters to the editor, and whether there is a word count limit (there usually is a limit).
    • If the journal does not have submission guidelines for the number of resources required, use 3–5 sources.
    • To be sure that your instructor knows the submission and formatting requirements for your letter, include the journal’s guidelines on a separate page at the end of the document you submit for this assessment.

chronic illness

wk1/resp/ T

There are many factors that affect chronic illness—chronic pain, stigma, social isolation, altered mobility, or fatigue. Utilizing your learning from your readings and the South University Online Library resources, respond to one the following questions:

Based on the research, which of these factors have the greatest impact on a patient? Why? Contrast at least two ways the factors would affect a twelve-year-old with the way they would affect a seventy-five-year-old.

Consider the twelve-year-old and the seventy-five-year-old have a chronic illness. How does the chronically ill patient’s illness trajectory influence the plan of care?

Review Healthypeople.gov website. Discuss how you feel these goals will impact the health of the nation. Briefly discuss how you could incorporate these goals/objectives into your day-to-day nursing practice.

Based on the research of chronic illness, the greatest impact I would say for a patient would be chronic pain and altered mobility. I have chosen these two because I put myself in this situation. If I was suffering from a chronic illness, I do not think I can overcome chronic pain or altered mobility. Not being able to move my upper and or lower extremities and enjoying the things I now take for granted such as walking, self-cares such as bathing, toileting, and feeding myself will be unbearable to think about. Having to depend on someone else or even worse not having family will be difficult as well. I think I can manage the social isolation but to be in excruciating pain day and night with no relief from pain meds will drive me to suicidal ideations. Dealing with chronic pain your body may grow accustom to pain meds and the relief may be temporary or may not be 100% effective or I may become addictive. Altered mobility of not being able to transfer or roll side to side or turning myself will send me down a road of depression.

A 12-year-old dealing with chronic pain or altered mobility will show more compliance because at this age they are going through a stage of independence and acceptance from peers. Research showed thatthere was a significant positive correlation between adolescents-valuing involvement in medical decisions and perception of actual involvement. Adolescents who perceived themselves as more involved in their care reported less decisional conflict (David, Lo, & Langer, 2018) A 75-year-old dealing with chronic pain and altered mobility may have a different outlook because at this age they may feel like they have lived their life and chooses to die as a result or they may feel as if this is a punishment from a bad deed they did in their past. They may be prescribed multiple medications and may have multiple medical problem leading to poor medication adherence and poor compliance (Shruthi, 2016).

Consider the twelve-year-old and the seventy-five-year-old have a chronic illness. How does the chronically ill patient’s illness trajectory influence the plan of care? The chronically ill patient for a 12-year-old and or a 75-year-old illness trajectory are imperative for a patient plan of care because this creates a road map for them to sequentially follow to progress healing and management. Our lecture brings out that this is a sick care system there are billions of dollars spent to treat an illness not realizing how cost-efficient it would be to promote a healthy lifestyle and having health insurance. This may help reduce out of pocket cost such as medications, hospital or doctor visits, and any personal health equipment needed such as wheel chair and at home hospital beds. Another illness trajectories action that may manage the course would be to know your family history, some illness due to lifestyle modification may be prevented whereas other illness may not. Some illness has genetic traits and knowing your family medical history ahead of time may be a future benefit. Eventualities often catch patients by surprise and affects their mental health negatively. On my maternal side majority of my aunts and mother have high blood pressure and diabetes and the men usually get tested for prostate cancer. Knowing this information ahead of time may prevent chronic illness if it is caught and treated early.

Review Healthypeople.gov website. Discuss how you feel these goals will impact the health of the nation. Briefly discuss how you could incorporate these goals/objectives into your day-to-day nursing practice.

Researched from the healthy people website, I feel that knowing your family history and staying abreast of your health and taking it seriously will provide the necessary fear to promote a health change to prevention rather than maintenance of a chronic illnesses. I can incorporate this goal through surveys or questionnaires that asks important questions such as how the patient rates their health overall, to what extent are you able to carry out your everyday physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or moving a chair? Or within the last week how many times did they feel fatigue or have any type of pain. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) began tracking health-related quality of life in the U.S. population through the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) in 2010. I would incorporate this in my nursing practice to encourage other nurses as well as patients to promote quality health care through simple questioning. to patients. This may promote patients to keep track and paying attention to their health. Keeping a daily or weekly journal and subconsciously noticing health changes may impact positively on the health of nation. The NHIS will include a generic instrument periodically to support assessment of health-related quality of life in physical, mental, and social domains of life. (Healthy people, 2010).

Ankle Pain:

Case # 2 Ankle Pain:

A 46-year-old female reports pain in both of her ankles, but she is more concerned about her right ankle. She was playing soccer over the weekend and heard a “pop.” She is able to bear weight, but it is uncomfortable. In determining the cause of the ankle pain, based on your knowledge of anatomy, what foot structures are likely involved? What other symptoms need to be explored? What are your differential diagnoses for ankle pain? What physical examination will you perform? What special maneuvers will you perform? Should you apply the Ottawa ankle rules to determine if you need additional testing?

Assignment:

Write an episodic/focused note about the patient in the case study to which you were assigned using the episodic/focused note. Provide evidence from the literature to support diagnostic tests that would be appropriate for each case. List five different possible conditions for the patient’s differential diagnosis, and justify why you selected each.
