The Myth of Lobbyists

Part I: Lobbyists  have been part of the U.S. Government system since the early 1800s. Lobbyists  play an important role in healthcare, as they are advocates for their interest  group. In a 4-5 page paper, analyze two examples of how lobbyists affect  healthcare legislation. Conclude your paper with your opinion about whether the  actions of lobbyists have a positive or negative effect on healthcare  legislation in the United States. Please keep in mind the position and facility  you selected. Make sure to include the following:

1. Discuss the specific interest of the lobbyist in each       example.
2. Discuss in detail some of the ethical issues and moral       disputes for each example.
3. Discuss your position on whether the lobbyists’ actions       are positive or negative on healthcare legislation in the United States       and support your points with details.

Part II: An  agenda can set the tone for a meeting. It’s an important tool to ensure  meetings are staying on track and meeting all of the objectives. Based on your Windshield Survey and Organizational Evaluation assessments, complete the following:

· Design an evidence-based wellness program to address the primary health concern of the population that integrates:

o Cultural considerations: Will you need to consult with someone from the population on how to approach the delivery of your program?

o CAM, traditional medicine, holistic health, and spirituality considerations.

o Linguistic considerations: Will you need interpreters or translators for either written or oral presentations?

o Educational considerations: What will be the best way to educate the population?

· Describe how you will market or advertise the wellness program.

o What are the benefits the program offers the population?

o Will you need incentives to ensure participation and completion of the program?

· Explain the ethical, legal, and economic factors that impact the health and wellness of the population. For example:

o The ethical considerations (such as justice, non-malfeasance, and duty) that can affect preventative care and health promotion.

o Local laws, federal laws, and the Affordable Health Care Act that can affect preventative care and health promotion.

o The potential economic impact of clinical prevention and health promotion related to health disparities of your population.

Past

Earliest nurses were often a response to wars and the need for medical care for injured soldiers.  These women were patriotic but not truly educated as nurses and often caused more damage than good related to their lack of basic healthcare knowledge (Keating & DeBoor, 2018).  Florence Nightingale was a proponent of nursing education from her own experiences during the Crimean War (Davida, 2012).  She influenced some of the first nursing schools with her idea that the education should stand alone and not be associated with an apprenticeship with the teaching hospital (Keating & DeBoor, 2018).

Present

Nurses of today specialize in all sorts of fields from the operating room to pediatrics to hospice to just name a few.  This specialization has made the nurse workforce incredibly diverse and nursing educators and programs have had to respond accordingly.  Economically, nursing schools have become expensive programs and often difficult to staff as experienced nurse educators retire (Keating & DeBoor, 2018).  Immense changes in technology from how a nurse charts to how IVFs are given have dramatically changed how nurses do their work and how they are educated.

Future

Higher education for nurses will continue to evolve with an emphasis on nursing research as well as life-long learning (Laureate, 2012c).  The need for evidence-based nursing research will influence healthcare to the extent that the solutions garnered from nursing investigation will be on the same par as medical studies done by providers.  This increased respect for nursing could lead to increased interest in nursing as a career and in nursing education overall.
