The Disaster, Man-Made or Natural

Select a potential natural or man-made disaster  that could happen in your community. Then, write a 3- to 4-page paper  about the disaster from the community nurse’s perspective.

Section 1: The Disaster, Man-Made or Natural

  • What disasters may strike your community and why? For example, do  you live in “Tornado Alley,” or has climate change resulted in unusual  cold weather snaps or blizzards in your community? Are you located in a  flood plain? Include possible diseases that may result from a natural  disaster, such as tetanus or cholera.

Section 2: The Nursing Response

  • Formulate responses to the disaster, considering systems and community levels of intervention.
  • Review websites where a disaster plan may be available for the  public, or if one is not currently available, call public health  department to see if a disaster plan exists for your community and what  the plan contains.
    • In addition to reviewing websites for information about your local  disaster plan, you will need to locate best practice/evidence-based  practice guidelines in professional literature to determine whether your  community’s disaster plan is as sound as it might be or if there is  room for improvement.

Section 3: Is My Community Prepared for a Disaster?

  • What conclusions can you draw about your community’s preparedness plan from having completed this evaluation?

Maxwell (n,d),  qualitative data

I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BASED IN THIS ARGUMENT.BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS

According to Maxwell (n,d),  qualitative data tends to be a lot more time consuming because so much information needs to be gathered from the individual person.  Quantitative data involves the gathering of numbers and statistics rather than information (Johnson, Dunlap, and Benoit, 2010).

One way a researcher could organize data is to prepare specific questions that only require yes and no answers.  Having a plan beforehand is very important because I think with qualitative data there can be so many different pathways to take.  Different kinds of situations come up.  You should decide what topic you want to cover and stick with that topic.  The study should have well organized simple understandable questions.

Before starting a research, it is important to have a good outline and know what your goals, methods, framework, and research questions (Maxwell, n.d.).

abnormal lab values

 Ja

A 58-year-old female is admitted for a work up for a complaint of neck and low back pain. During admission, you discover that she underwent a renal transplant six years ago. The patient also had blood work collected. When you review the findings, you notice that her serum calcium is elevated at 13.9 (Normal values range from 8.5 to 10.2 mg/dl), her CBC shows a hematocrit of 33%, and hemoglobin of 11.1 g/dl (normal adult female hematocrit Range: 37-47%, normal adult female hemoglobin range: 12-16 g/dl). What does this mean and what could be the underlying cause of her pain and her abnormal lab values? What other assessments would be helpful?

The first thing that I would address is how she is doing with her anti-rejection medications and when the last time she followed up with her transplant team. Although the rate of rejection decreases every year after a transplant, the long term success of a kidney transplant significantly depends on regular follow up care with the transplant team, taking anti-rejection medications, and following the advice/care plan that is set in place for you (Kimberley, 2017). The fact that she is having that lower back pain concerns me of some type of kidney issue that can be as minor as a kidney stone or as severe as possible rejection. The elevated calcium can be attributed to many different things. It can be from overactive parathyroid glands, cancer, and a whole list of other things. I am suspecting that this patient could possibly be dehydrated because hypercalcemia can also be attributed to severe dehydration, which is also why my main concern is what is going on with her kidneys (Lumachi, 2010). Having a low hematocrit means that the percentage of red blood cells is lower what is expected. The patient can have some kind of internal bleeding, or possibly even cancer. She has been on the anti-rejection medications for 6 years. A side effect of those anti-rejection medications is a secondary cancer. It wouldn’t hurt to have that evaluated. A lower hemoglobin can also be indicative of chronic kidney disease, and/or cancer (Kimberley, 2017).

I would recommend that an entire kidney workup be completed for this patient. That would incredude a complete metabolic panel, a UA, Renal US. It is possible that this is just a kidney stone, but that is where I would start. If all those prove to be normal then I would do a cancer workup to see if it is possible the patient has developed a secondary cancer from the anti-rejection medications. If that proves not to be the problem then I would consider maybe with the patients age that this could be indicative to osteoporosis.

PART 3

Read the case study and provide complete and detailed responses for the questions below. Some questions will ask for information not included within this chapter. Use your textbook, a medical dictionary, or any other reference material you choose to answer these questions.  A 40-year-old female is seen in the dermatologist’s office, on the recommendation of her internist, for a workup for suspected MM on her left forearm. The suspicious lesion was a blackish skin growth approximately 1 cm in diameter. The dermatologist examined the patient and a tissue biopsy was performed. The biopsy confirmed that the growth was MM. Surgery was performed to remove the tumor. In addition, a 5 cm by 5 cm square of skin immediately surrounding the tumor was also moved. Because the removed skin included all three layers of skin, a skin graft was necessary to cover the open area. The donor site was the patient’s thigh. Following recovery from surgery, the patient was referred to an oncologist for follow-up care.  Critical Thinking Questions  Answer the questions below regarding this case study. Do not just copy words out of the case study; translate all medical terms. To answer some of these questions, you may need to look up information from another chapter of this textbook.

1.   What pathological condition does the internist think this patient may have? Look this condition up in a reference source, and include a short description of it in your answer.

2.   What diagnostic test did the dermatologist perform? Describe it in your own words.

3.   Explain why a skin graft was necessary.        4.   Explain why it was necessary to remove so much additional skin tissue along with the tumor.

5.   What is the specialty of an oncologist?        6.   What do you think the possible follow-up care might include?

Continuum and Coordination of Health Care Presentation

Continuum and Coordination of Health Care Presentation

As a graduate student and health care administrator, you must be able to research a critical issue or situation and present your findings in a compelling manner. For this Assignment, as well as this module’s Discussion, you will examine the continuum of care a patient may need and research the services available in your area to support the patient.

Note: During the Module 3 Discussion, you will share some of the information for this Assignment with your colleagues.

To develop the content for your presentation, record detailed notes as you complete the following steps.

  • Review the information about the continuum and coordination of health services presented in the Learning Resources, including the HIMSS resource, Continuum of Care, and the tables in Chapter 1 of the course text.
  • Develop a brief description of a hypothetical adult patient who has a serious health problem or injury. Imagine this patient lives in your local area. If you are an international student, you may choose a geographic area in the United States or use your own location.
  • Use the pertinent information in Chapters 7, 8, 9, and/or 10 of the Shi & Singh textbook and conduct additional research of your own to analyze specific services your hypothetical patient might need, beginning with the onset or diagnosis of an illness or injury and concluding with an end-point of your choosing (i.e., recovery, symptom management, end of life). Also research the types of organizations that provide those services.
  • Investigate the health care organizations in your local area. Based on the services your hypothetical patient needs, select four or five actual settings in which he/she would receive care.
  • Next, gather information related to the types of insurance from which each organization accepts payment. Typically, this would include Medicare, Medicaid, and various types of insurance programs. What challenges do you anticipate your patient may have related to payment for services?
  • Review the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (2014) resource and consider what it means for health care to be safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable. Analyze how the scenario you have created—with your hypothetical patient receiving services from actual settings in your geographic area—illustrates positive or negative attributes related to two or more of the six Institute of Medicine aims.
  • Next, prepare to create your presentation using PowerPoint. Examine the Presentation Guidelines and Tips and the Module 3 Assignment Template, both found in this module’s Learning Resources.

The Assignment

Download and save the Module 3 Assignment Template, found in this module’s Learning Resources. Use the template to create a succinct and engaging PowerPoint presentation. Include the following:

  • Title slide
  • Introduction slide
  • 7–9 slides* in which you:
    • Introduce the patient, health problem/injury, and geographic area.
    • Describe the continuum of care, including specific services from four or five actual settings in your local area.
    • Describe a potential challenge related to payment for services this patient may encounter.
    • Explain how this example illustrates positive or negative attributes related to two or more of the six Institute of Medicine (IOM) aims.
  • Sources slide*
    • List all resources (a minimum of 4) used to develop your presentation.

*Apply the design principles included in Presentation Guidelines and Tips to develop a professional presentation.

  • On your content slides, use a combination of text, photos, graphs, maps, links to websites, color contrasts, and/or other visual elements to convey the information.
  • Create presenter notes of a few sentences to accompany each slide in a way that supports (rather than duplicates) the information presented visually.

Your presentation must be written in standard edited English. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this module’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. See the rubric in the Course Information area for additional requirements related to research and scholarly writing/presentation.
