Designing Mixed Methods Research

Mixed methods research designs refer to a set of designs that purposively mix or integrate both qualitative data and quantitative data. As with quantitative research and qualitative research, the choice to use mixed methods research is influenced by the researcher’s philosophical orientation.

This week’s readings provide an overview of various types of mixed methods research designs. As with previous discussions on design, the selection of the most appropriate mixed design is guided by the study’s purpose and research questions and/or hypotheses. The choice of design links the research questions and/or hypotheses to the data that will be collected achieving alignment among research components.

In this Discussion, you will explore the basics of mixed methods research designs, calling upon your growing understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 your response to the question, “To what extent is mixed methods research simply taking a quantitative design and a qualitative design and putting them together?” Next, explain the types of research questions best served by mixed methods research. Then, explain one strength and one limitation of mixed methods research. Finally, provide a rationale for or against the utility of mixed methods research in your discipline.

Overview

Appropriation art is often at the intersection of expression and intellectual property protections. Artists frequently draw from the works of others for inspiration, but appropriation art is just that—art that appropriates the works of other artists into a new expression to serve a new viewpoint or make a new statement. This type of artwork has frequently been the subject of claims for copyright infringement by artists who feel that the use of their work by another artist is a violation of their exclusive rights as a copyright holder.

Procedure

Prepare your thoughts on appropriation art and the applicability of the fair-use defense to copyright infringement claims brought in connection with this type of artwork.

Focus on the following questions:

• Is appropriation art copyright infringement?
• Does the fair-use defense apply to excuse the infringement?

Use specific case law to support your statements.

For this Assignment, select one developmental stage, such as infancy — ages birth to 2; early childhood — ages 3 to 6; middle childhood — ages 7 to 12; or adolescence — ages 13 to 18.
