For this assignment, write a 5–6 page report examining the types of securities in your bank’s investment portfolio. You will also make some inferences about the factors that played a role in the selection of securities for that portfolio. The possible factors are discussed in your text and this assignment also examines the maturity structure of your bank’s securities portfolio.

Investment Data

Access the data for your chosen bank through the FDIC’s Statistics on Depository Institutions. Use the Statistics on Depository Institutions (SDI) to create a four-column report of your bank’s information and its peer group information. This report should span across the years. Note: For Report Selection use the pull-down menu to select Securities and view this in Percentages of Total Assets.

Analysis

For your analysis consider the following questions:

  • How has the relative size of your bank’s securities-to-total assets changed across the periods?
  • Does your bank have more or less liquidity than the group of comparable institutions?

Using the chart function in Microsoft Excel and the data by columns, create four pie charts illustrating the profile of securities held by your BHC and its peer group. Provide titles, labels, and percentages.

Using the above information, create a report of your bank’s securities portfolio and how it compares to its peers. Provide inferences concerning the factors, such as expected return, interest rate risk, and others, affecting the choice of securities.

Inferences for the Industry

Based on the analysis of the investment portfolio for this company, and bank management theory, as covered in course readings and research, what strategies and recommendations can you offer for managing the sources of bank funds? Provide support for your position from relevant sources.

Regardless of political affiliation, individuals often grow concerned when considering perceived competing interests of government and their impact on topics of interest to them. The realm of healthcare is no different. Some people feel that local, state, and federal policies and legislation can be either helped or hindered by interests other than the benefit to society.

The suppliers of legislative benefits are legislators, and their primary goal is to be re-elected. Thus, legislators need to maximize their chances for re-election, which requires political support. Legislators are assumed to be rational and to make cost-benefit calculations when faced with demands for legislation. However, the legislator’s cost-benefit calculations are not the cost-benefits to society of enacting particular legislation. Instead, the benefits are the additional political support the legislator would receive from supporting legislation and the lost political support they would incur as a result of their action. When the benefit to legislators (positive political support) exceeds their costs (negative political support) they will support legislation. (page 27)

Having worked for the prosecution and the defense in different cases, I can easily switch support to either side of an issue. In preparation for trial, I was relied upon often to play the “devil’s advocate” and argue the opposing side’s position. I especially liked prepping witnesses for trial and playing the opposing counsel. There were emotional cases, such as child abuse, child pornography, sexual assault, etc. that when working for the defense it was very difficult to remain objective and assist in defending the case. However, as a legal professional, I felt it was my responsibility to assist in providing the best defense possible for the client. In these type of cases, I have to set aside my personal feelings and concentrate on the laws and case precedence which will enable me to provide the best possible legal representation to a client. I cannot picture a scenario in which I would choose to work for the defense in criminal cases. I am confident I could do it on a professional level, but I do not believe I would be able to handle defending someone who I strongly suspected or knew was guilty of a crime, on a personal level. In preparing for a case, it is imperative that you are able to see the opposing side’s argument and accept that some of their positions are valid, either morally, legally or both. By being able to recognize the strengths of the opposing side, you will be able to better prepare to represent and defend your client’s interests. One of the ways I prepare to play the opposing side is to list the strengths and weaknesses of my own case. I use the knowledge of my own position, to develop a list of the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. This, in turn, allows me research and develop defenses against their strengths and identify issues in my own position that I need to concentrate on. I think it is very important to be able to view both sides of an argument in anything I do in life. From negotiating a contract, supporting a candidate in politics, or representing a client, blind obedience to one point of view, without considering the opposing point of view, limits my ability to make educated decisions and weakens my ability to intelligently defend my position. According to the University of Kansas’ Community Tool Box, How to Respond to Opposition Tactics: If knowledge is power, ignorance is weakness. An opponent you understand is much weaker than an opponent whose every move baffles you. Understand your foe’s beliefs, background, and position. This will put you in a stronger position to respond to attacks. It can also increase your organization’s image as an intelligent, rational group.[1] I find that the key thing for me when developing an opposing view to my own, is to set aside my personal convictions and try to see the issue through my opponent’s eyes.

INTERACTIVE MEDIA: Hispanic Male with major depressive disorder (MDD)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The client is a 70 year-old Hispanic American male who came to the United States when he was in high school with his father. His mother died back in Mexico when he was in school. He presents today to your office for an initial appointment for complaints of depression. The client was referred by his PCP after “routine” medical work-up to rule out an organic basis for his depression. He has no other health issues with the exception of some occasional back pain and “stiff” shoulders which he attributes to his current work as a laborer in a warehouse.

SUBJECTIVE

During today’s clinical interview, client reports that he always felt like an outsider as he was “teased” a lot for being “black” in high school. States that he had few friends, and basically kept to himself. He describes his home life as “good.” Stating “Dad did what he could for us, there were 8 of us.” He also reports a remarkably diminished interest in engaging in usual activities, states that he has gained 15 pounds in the last 2 months. He is also troubled with insomnia which began about 6 months ago, but have been progressively getting worse. He does report poor concentration which he reports is getting in “trouble” at work.

MENTAL STATUS EXAM

The client is alert, oriented to person, place, time, and event. He is casually dressed. Speech is clear, but soft. He does not readily make eye contact, but when he does, it is only for a few moments. He is endorsing feelings of depression. Affect is somewhat constricted, but improves as the clinical interview progresses. He denies visual or auditory hallucinations, no overt delusional or paranoid thought processes readily apparent. Judgment and insight appear grossly intact. He is currently denying suicidal or homicidal ideation. You administer the “Montgomery- Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)” and obtained a score of 51 (indicating severe depression).
